A criminal or a hero? An Italian hospital worker is accused of being paid €538k over 15 years despite never actually turning up for his job!
The 66-year-old man is being investigated for abuse of office, fraud and aggravated after continuing to receive his monthly wage without ever actually showing up for work where he’s been ’employed’ since 2005.
It’s also alleged that in 2005, the man-made threats toward the hospital director in a bid to prevent her from flagging his absenteeism. As a result, the director is believed to have retired, and so his ongoing absence was never noticed by her successor or human resources.
The man, believed to be, Salvatore Scumace, was officially fired in October 2020 following investigations.
Six managers at the hospital in the southern city of Catanzaro are also being investigated by police.
The managers and staff were named as Nino Critelli, 66, Vittorio Prejanò, 64, Maria Pia De Vito, 68, Domenico Canino, 62, Laura Fondacaro, 52, and Antonio Molè, 53.
The investigation, codenamed Part-Time, has been underway for some time and is part of a bigger sting where police have been trying to crack down on ‘systematic absenteeism’ in the public sector.
The wider investigation also found wives clocking their husband’s into work before spending the rest of the day canoeing, shopping and taking naps!
