Crying over chopped onions may be a thing of the past thanks to a nifty new product called ‘Sunions’.
This new type of onion has been in the works for over 30 years and countless breeding cycles in a bid to find a tear stopping onion as opposed to the classic tear-jerker.
The chemical released by normal onions that makes you tear up is called propyl sulfoxide, and Sunions are reported to release less of it.
It is most potent at room temperature and when mixed with the moisture in the air it converts to sulfuric acid which irritates the eye. As a natural form of defence, you begin to cry to get rid of the allergen.
This chemical is the product of evolution, a form of defence against any animals/creatures that tries to eat them.
We can assure you that Sunions are NOT genetically modified they are simply the process of all-natural cross-breeding of certain onions.
The Sunions website reads:
“Unlike all other onions, Sunions become sweeter every day. Volatile compounds in onions are responsible for tearing and pungent flavour and the amounts of those compounds in other onions remain the same or increase over time.”
They are currently grown in Washington and Nevada in the United States; availability for these game-changing onions start from mid-December through to March/April depending on supply/demand.
Onion buyer for Waitrose, Paul Bidwell told FEMAIL;
‘We understand how a-peeling tearless onions are to our customers which is why we’re delighted to launch Sunions in selected stores and via Waitrose.com.’
The Sunion was released in the US around four years ago but the reviews were not as warm as you’d expect.
They will be on sale in selected Waitrose stores from 18th January 2022.
