Jolie Mejía along with her family decided to go on a trip to Punta Negra, a small seaside town near their house in Peru.

During their visit to the quaint rocky shore, they learned of the purest love story.

Once Jolie and her family started to relax in their chosen spot a dog that appeared to be alone approached them.

“He didn’t seem abandoned. He wore a ribbon around his neck and his fur was clean. I pet him, waiting for his owner, but minutes passed and no one came.” Mejía said when speaking with The Dodo.

Whilst the dog was enjoying the fuss from Jolie his gaze was still fixed on the ocean. It wasn’t long after that she found the heartbreaking reason why.

Jolie and the rest of her family were considering adopting the dog under the assumption he had been abandoned. They asked a local who happened to be passing by if they knew anything about the dog.

Jolie shared: “He explained that practically everyone in the area knows the dog and is very fond of him. He told us that the dog’s owner was a fisherman who passed away some time ago and that the dog comes to the beach every day and stares out to sea.”

The dog was waiting every day for his long lost friend to return but he never came.

Jolie and her family “Were very moved”.

She believes his owner died out at sea around a year ago and the dog has been waiting for his return every day ever since.

The dog’s heart-breaking story is well-known by the people in the community, they shelter, feed and provide any healthcare when he requires it.

The Punta Negra local vet said the dog’s name is Vaguito and that he is currently cared for by a woman who lives nearby.

As the day drew to an end Jolie and her family had to leave Vaguito, his gaze still fixated on the sea.

Jolie said: “I have a dog at home, I love dogs in general. His story really touched my heart.”
