Bitcoin Takes Aim at Gold

Bitcoin Takes Aim at Gold

Bitcoin has spent much of its history being compared with gold. Now, that comparison is becoming increasingly significant as cryptocurrency grows into a more established part of global finance.

Binance co-founder Changpeng “CZ” Zhao believes Bitcoin could eventually surpass gold in overall market value. Speaking at Bitcoin Asia 2026 in Hong Kong, Zhao highlighted growing government interest, institutional adoption and Bitcoin’s limited supply as factors that could help narrow the gap.

For now, gold remains comfortably ahead. However, Bitcoin has already evolved dramatically from its early days. As governments and investors explore alternative ways to protect and store wealth, the idea of Bitcoin challenging gold no longer feels quite as distant.

So, what would need to happen for Bitcoin to take aim at gold and potentially overtake the precious metal?

Bitcoin’s Scarcity Remains a Major Strength

Scarcity sits at the heart of Bitcoin’s appeal.

The cryptocurrency has a maximum supply of 21 million coins. Unlike traditional currencies, that limit cannot simply be increased in response to economic pressures.

Gold is scarce too, of course. However, mining companies continue to discover and extract new supplies.

Bitcoin operates differently. Its future supply is built into its underlying protocol, giving investors a clearer picture of how many coins can ultimately enter circulation.

This has strengthened Bitcoin’s reputation as “digital gold”.

During periods of inflation, rising government debt or currency uncertainty, investors often look towards assets that cannot easily be created in unlimited quantities. Traditionally, gold has filled that role.

Increasingly, Bitcoin is competing for the same attention.

Could Governments Start Holding More Bitcoin?

Government adoption could become one of the most important developments in Bitcoin’s future.

Central banks have historically relied on gold, foreign currencies and government securities as reserve assets. These markets are mature, highly liquid and supported by decades of established financial infrastructure.

Bitcoin presents something different.

CZ believes governments could gradually allocate a larger proportion of their strategic reserves to cryptocurrency. In his view, Bitcoin could eventually account for more than half of strategic crypto reserves, alongside other major digital assets.

Such a change would not happen overnight.

Governments require secure custody systems, clear regulations and established methods for valuing and managing their reserves. Gold already has all of these advantages.

Nevertheless, even relatively small government allocations could matter.

Bitcoin has a limited supply. Therefore, increasing competition for available BTC could have a substantial impact on demand over time.

Institutional Adoption Could Push Bitcoin Further

Institutional adoption is another reason why the gap between Bitcoin and gold could narrow.

Cryptocurrency was once dominated by retail traders and early technology enthusiasts. Today, professional investors have considerably more opportunities to access Bitcoin through regulated financial products and institutional custody services.

That shift has helped Bitcoin move closer to mainstream finance.

Large investors also bring something particularly valuable to the cryptocurrency market: credibility.

As established financial institutions become increasingly comfortable with Bitcoin, other investors may feel more confident about gaining exposure.

This could create a gradual cycle of adoption.

Greater institutional participation encourages improved infrastructure. Better infrastructure makes Bitcoin easier to access. Easier access can then attract further investment.

However, Bitcoin still has a long way to go before matching gold’s position within traditional investment portfolios.

Economic Uncertainty Could Strengthen Bitcoin’s Case

The wider economic environment may also influence whether Bitcoin can challenge gold.

Concerns surrounding government debt, inflation and currency depreciation can encourage investors to look beyond conventional currencies.

Gold has historically benefited from these periods.

However, Bitcoin is increasingly appearing in similar conversations.

According to the BlockNews report, Bitcoin had recovered towards $80,000 following a strong weekly rise, while gold had climbed above $4,600. Both assets were benefiting from renewed interest in scarce stores of value.

That simultaneous strength is important.

Bitcoin does not necessarily need investors to abandon gold completely. Instead, it could increasingly become another option for those seeking assets outside traditional currencies.

If that behaviour continues, Bitcoin could capture a larger share of global investment capital.

Bitcoin Takes Aim at Gold, but Major Challenges Remain

Despite its growth, Bitcoin still faces significant obstacles.

Volatility remains one of the biggest.

Gold prices fluctuate, but Bitcoin can experience dramatic movements over relatively short periods. This creates opportunities for traders, yet it can also make BTC less appealing to conservative investors.

Governments may face the same dilemma.

Reserve assets are generally expected to provide reliability and liquidity. Extreme volatility can complicate that role.

Regulation is another challenge.

Although cryptocurrency regulation continues to develop globally, approaches vary considerably between countries. Greater regulatory certainty could encourage adoption. Conversely, restrictive policies could slow it.

Gold also benefits from history.

Humans have valued the precious metal for thousands of years. Bitcoin has existed for less than two decades.

Overcoming that difference in trust could take time.

AI Could Become Another Driver of Crypto Adoption

Bitcoin was not the only digital asset discussed by CZ.

He also expects artificial intelligence and cryptocurrency to become increasingly interconnected.

Stablecoins could play a particularly important role.

As AI agents become more autonomous, they may require ways to transfer value without relying entirely on traditional banking infrastructure. Blockchain-based payments could provide one potential solution.

Stablecoins may be especially suited to this because their value is generally linked to conventional assets such as national currencies.

Once AI systems can interact with stablecoins, integrating other cryptocurrencies could become easier.

CZ also believes AI-assisted trading could develop faster than autonomous consumer payments. Financial markets involve enormous quantities of information, rapid price changes and constant news flow. These characteristics make them well suited to AI-powered analysis.

Therefore, the convergence of AI and blockchain technology could introduce another source of crypto activity.

Can Bitcoin Really Overtake Gold?

For Bitcoin to take aim at gold successfully, several trends would probably need to continue for years.

Institutional adoption would need to grow. Governments would need to become more comfortable holding digital assets. Cryptocurrency regulation would need to mature, while Bitcoin would have to maintain its position as the dominant digital store of value.

Most importantly, investors would need to continue viewing Bitcoin as more than a speculative asset.

Gold is unlikely to disappear from global portfolios. Its history, liquidity and importance to central banks make that extremely unlikely.

Instead, Bitcoin may gradually establish itself alongside gold.

The two assets could serve similar purposes for different generations of investors. Gold offers centuries of established trust, while Bitcoin offers digital portability, transparent scarcity and global accessibility.

CZ’s prediction remains highly ambitious. Gold’s market value is still substantially larger than Bitcoin’s, meaning overtaking it would require an enormous expansion in cryptocurrency adoption.

Nevertheless, Bitcoin has repeatedly demonstrated its ability to move from the fringes of finance towards the mainstream.

The next chapter could depend on governments, institutions and changing attitudes towards digital scarcity.

Whether Bitcoin ultimately overtakes gold remains impossible to know. However, the competition between the world’s most famous precious metal and its digital challenger is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.
