Web3 Weekly: Top Developments & Market Trends

The cryptocurrency market has entered another eventful week, with Bitcoin, Ethereum and XRP facing a mixture of market pressure, technological developments and security concerns. Meanwhile, NFTs, stablecoins and blockchain infrastructure continue to evolve beyond the movements of individual cryptocurrencies.

Bitcoin has started the week under pressure as wider geopolitical uncertainty affects risk assets. Ethereum is attracting attention for both its price performance and its future development roadmap. XRP, meanwhile, has been thrust into the spotlight following movements involving funds connected to the recent Bitget security incident.

Away from the largest cryptocurrencies, the Web3 industry continues to develop. High-value NFT sales are still taking place, stablecoins are becoming more integrated into everyday blockchain transactions, and financial institutions continue exploring tokenisation.

In this edition of Web3 Weekly: Top Developments & Market Trends, we look at some of the biggest developments shaping the cryptocurrency and blockchain landscape.

Bitcoin Faces Pressure as Global Uncertainty Returns

Bitcoin has started the week on uncertain ground, with BTC trading around the $83,000 level as geopolitical concerns returned to the market.

Renewed tensions involving the United States and Iran have contributed to nervousness across global markets. Cryptocurrency has increasingly traded alongside other risk-sensitive assets during periods of heightened economic or geopolitical uncertainty.

Consequently, Bitcoin traders are watching developments beyond the cryptocurrency sector.

Oil prices, inflation expectations and wider financial markets could all influence Bitcoin sentiment. Investors are also preparing for further US economic data, including inflation, manufacturing and employment figures.

However, another interesting trend has emerged beneath the short-term price movements.

Large Bitcoin holders, often referred to as “whales”, have reportedly accumulated approximately 113,950 BTC over a ten-week period. At recent prices, that represents roughly $9.6 billion worth of Bitcoin.

Whale accumulation does not guarantee that Bitcoin prices will rise. Nevertheless, substantial purchases by larger holders can provide useful insight into how certain market participants are positioning themselves during periods of volatility.

Therefore, Bitcoin’s next moves could depend on a combination of macroeconomic conditions, geopolitical developments and cryptocurrency-specific demand.

Web3 Weekly: Ethereum Price Retreats as Attention Turns to Future Upgrades

Ethereum has also faced selling pressure, with ETH falling back towards the mid-$2,600 range after struggling to remain above $2,800.

Short-term price performance, however, is only one part of the Ethereum story.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has recently discussed significant changes to how the network could approach future upgrades. The upcoming Hegota era has attracted particular attention.

Hegota could represent an important transition in Ethereum’s development model. According to recent comments, it may potentially mark the end of the network’s traditional approach to major hard forks.

Instead, Ethereum developers could increasingly move towards a different system for implementing protocol improvements.

This matters because Ethereum remains one of the most important pieces of infrastructure within Web3.

Decentralised finance applications, NFTs, stablecoins and numerous blockchain projects continue to rely on Ethereum and its wider ecosystem. As a result, improvements to scalability, efficiency and network development can have implications far beyond ETH itself.

Ethereum’s roadmap will therefore remain an important Web3 trend to follow.

XRP in Focus Following Bitget Security Incident

XRP has become central to one of the week’s biggest cryptocurrency security stories.

Wallets connected to the recent Bitget security incident reportedly moved approximately 54 million XRP, valued at around $83 million at the time of reporting.

The situation highlights an important distinction between native cryptocurrencies and certain issued digital assets.

Stablecoin issuers can sometimes freeze tokens linked to suspicious activity. However, native XRP cannot simply be frozen by Ripple at protocol level.

This difference has become particularly relevant following the Bitget incident.

The cryptocurrency exchange reported a major security breach on 24 September, initially estimating that approximately $352 million in assets had been affected. Bitget maintained that user funds remained safe.

Subsequent reporting and analysis have continued to examine the scale of the incident and the movement of associated assets.

Meanwhile, issuers including Circle and Tether have reportedly been able to freeze some stablecoins connected with suspicious wallets.

The incident is another reminder that blockchain security remains one of the industry’s biggest challenges.

Although blockchain transactions can provide significant transparency, their irreversible nature can create complications when assets are stolen.

Web3 Weekly: Ripple and Tokenisation Gain Attention in South Korea

Despite the security-related headlines surrounding XRP, the wider Ripple ecosystem is also attracting attention for a very different reason.

Financial institutions in South Korea continue to explore blockchain technology and tokenisation.

Representatives connected with major institutions, including Woori Bank and Kakao Bank, are expected around the XRP Seoul 2026 conference. Their involvement reflects growing interest in how blockchain infrastructure could interact with traditional financial services.

Tokenisation has become one of Web3’s most important institutional trends.

The technology allows assets or financial instruments to be represented digitally on blockchain networks. Potential applications range from securities and funds to real-world assets and payment infrastructure.

Importantly, institutional blockchain adoption does not necessarily depend on speculative cryptocurrency trading.

Instead, banks and financial companies are increasingly investigating whether blockchain technology can improve settlement, asset management and financial infrastructure.

This could become a major theme throughout the remainder of 2026.

NFT Market Records Another Six-Figure Sale

The NFT sector remains far quieter than during the peak of the market’s previous boom. Nevertheless, significant transactions are still occurring.

One recent example comes from the Hyperliquid ecosystem.

Hyperliquid’s Hypurr #9 NFT reportedly sold for 2,222 HYPE, valued at approximately $203,800 at the time of the transaction.

A six-figure NFT sale naturally attracts attention. However, individual transactions should not automatically be interpreted as evidence of a full NFT market recovery.

Instead, the sale demonstrates that collectors are still willing to assign substantial value to particular digital assets connected with active crypto communities.

The relationship between tokens, communities and digital collectibles remains an interesting area of Web3 development.

As blockchain ecosystems expand, NFTs could increasingly function as community assets, membership tools, identity markers or digital ownership records rather than simply speculative images.

Web3 Weekly: Could NFTs Be Preparing for Another Cycle?

The possibility of an NFT recovery is also generating discussion among cryptocurrency traders.

Crypto personality Ansem has recently expressed optimism about another potential NFT cycle, particularly where artificial intelligence intersects with digital ownership.

However, such comments represent market opinion rather than confirmation of an NFT resurgence.

The wider NFT market would likely need to demonstrate sustained increases in trading activity, user participation and demand before a meaningful recovery could be established.

Nevertheless, the intersection between AI, NFTs and digital ownership is worth monitoring.

Artificial intelligence is making digital content easier to create at scale. Consequently, proving ownership, authenticity and provenance could become increasingly important.

Blockchain technology could potentially play a role in that process.

The next phase of NFTs may therefore look very different from the profile-picture-driven boom that previously dominated the market.

Stablecoins Become Easier to Use Across Blockchain Networks

Stablecoins continue to become more deeply integrated into blockchain infrastructure.

One notable development comes from Binance Wallet, which now supports paying blockchain gas fees using USDT across several major networks.

Supported networks reportedly include Ethereum, Solana, BNB Smart Chain and Tron.

Traditionally, blockchain users need to hold a network’s native cryptocurrency to pay transaction fees. An Ethereum user needs ETH, for example, while a Solana user generally needs SOL.

This can create friction for people moving between multiple blockchain ecosystems.

Allowing users to pay fees using a familiar stablecoin could simplify the experience considerably.

Although seemingly a small technical improvement, developments like this are important for wider Web3 adoption.

For blockchain applications to reach larger audiences, using them needs to become easier.

Reducing the number of tokens users must manage is one step towards that goal.

US Crypto Regulation Remains a Major Web3 Theme

Regulation continues to shape the cryptocurrency industry’s direction in the United States.

Following difficulties surrounding federal cryptocurrency legislation, attention has increasingly turned towards what existing regulators can achieve using their current powers.

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission has signalled that work surrounding digital-asset regulation remains a priority.

For cryptocurrency businesses, greater regulatory clarity could have significant consequences.

Companies need to understand how digital assets will be classified, which regulators have authority and what requirements apply to trading platforms and other blockchain services.

However, the regulatory landscape remains complex.

Different parts of the cryptocurrency sector can fall under different frameworks. Stablecoins, securities, commodities and decentralised protocols can also raise separate legal questions.

As a result, US cryptocurrency regulation will remain one of the most important blockchain developments to watch.

Web3 Weekly: Blockchain Security Remains Under the Spotlight

The Bitget incident also feeds into a broader trend affecting Web3: cybersecurity.

As cryptocurrency adoption increases, exchanges, wallets, bridges and decentralised applications continue to attract attackers.

Large security incidents can affect hundreds of millions of dollars in digital assets.

However, blockchain technology also creates unusual conditions for investigators. Transactions are often publicly visible, meaning analysts can monitor the movement of stolen funds in real time.

The challenge is stopping those assets from being converted, transferred or laundered through other services.

Stablecoin freezing mechanisms provide one potential response. Yet native cryptocurrencies are often much harder to restrict.

Therefore, improving security before an attack occurs remains crucial.

Exchanges and Web3 companies are likely to continue investing heavily in wallet security, infrastructure monitoring and threat detection.

Web3 Weekly: What Are the Biggest Market Trends?

Several themes stand out across this week’s Web3 developments.

Bitcoin remains closely connected to global financial conditions. Macroeconomic data and geopolitical uncertainty can quickly influence cryptocurrency sentiment.

Ethereum, meanwhile, continues evolving technologically even while ETH experiences short-term price volatility.

XRP is demonstrating another important characteristic of blockchain assets. Native cryptocurrencies behave differently from centrally issued stablecoins when authorities or companies attempt to restrict suspicious funds.

Elsewhere, NFTs continue producing isolated high-value sales, although evidence of a broad market recovery remains limited.

Stablecoins are becoming more useful across multiple blockchain networks. At the same time, tokenisation continues attracting interest from established financial institutions.

Finally, regulation and cybersecurity remain fundamental challenges for the industry.

Taken together, these developments show how much Web3 has expanded beyond cryptocurrency prices alone.

Markets will always attract attention. However, the underlying technology, regulation and infrastructure could ultimately determine how widely blockchain is adopted.

As another week begins, Web3 Weekly: Top Developments & Market Trends will continue to follow Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, NFTs and the wider blockchain industry as these stories develop.
