From Service to Sea: VEP Sailing Events’ Veteran-Led Mission
VEP Sailing Events is a veteran-led sailing project created to support ex-service personnel as they navigate life after the forces. When military service ends, the transition is not always easy. For many veterans, it can feel abrupt, disorientating, and isolating, as the structure and shared purpose of service life fall away.
Routine changes overnight. Direction can feel uncertain. The strong sense of belonging found in the armed forces is suddenly harder to replace. As a result, many ex-service personnel experience isolation, unemployment, or a loss of confidence — not because they lack ability, but because civilian life does not always offer the same clarity, structure, or community.
VEP Sailing Events exists to address that gap. Through sailing, teamwork, and time at sea, the project offers practical opportunities for veterans to reconnect with purpose in a supportive, non-judgemental environment.
Understanding the Challenges Veterans Face After Service
Leaving the armed forces often means leaving behind more than a career. It means stepping away from a close-knit team, defined roles, and shared responsibility. While many veterans transition successfully, others find the adjustment more difficult.
This struggle is often misunderstood. Veterans are not broken. They are adjusting.
Civilian life rarely mirrors the trust, teamwork, and structure found in service. Over time, this disconnect can affect wellbeing, confidence, and mental health. VEP Sailing Events was created with this reality in mind, offering veterans an environment that feels familiar in positive ways, while removing pressure and expectation.
Why Sailing Plays a Powerful Role

Sailing is not presented as therapy, nor does it replace professional support. However, time at sea offers a unique combination of structure, responsibility, and reflection.
Life aboard a sailing yacht requires focus, cooperation, and shared problem-solving. Every person has a role, and every role matters. For many veterans, this mirrors the best elements of service life, without hierarchy or judgement.
Additionally, the rhythm of the sea helps quiet mental noise. Being away from daily pressures allows space to think clearly, reconnect with others, and rebuild confidence through action rather than conversation.
Above all, veterans are not asked to explain their past. They are simply invited to take part, contribute, and belong.
A Project Built on Respect and Lived Experience
VEP Sailing Events was founded by someone with extensive experience around sailing, classic yachts, and crewed environments. Through those years came a clear understanding of how powerful being at sea can be, particularly in team-based settings.
At the same time, awareness grew around how many former service personnel struggle after leaving the forces — not due to failure, but because the transition to civilian life is often underestimated.
Regardless of personal views or wider world events, one principle remains central to the project: those who served deserve respect, meaningful opportunities, and support that goes beyond words.
Rona: A Yacht with a Legacy of Service

At the centre of VEP Sailing Events is Rona, a 78ft classic sailing yacht built in 1895.
Over her 130-year history, Rona has served as a naval training vessel, supported disadvantaged young people, and competed internationally as a racing yacht. Throughout every chapter, her purpose has remained consistent — teaching teamwork, responsibility, and resilience.
That legacy makes Rona ideally suited to this mission. She is not simply a yacht, but a vessel with a long-standing connection to learning, opportunity, and shared endeavour.
Returning to UK Waters in 2026
Rona will return to UK waters in late 2026, with plans to appear at major sailing events including Cowes Week Regatta 2026.
During the high season, she will operate as a charter yacht at regattas and events. This commercial activity helps fund the project and support its long-term sustainability. During the low season, Rona is dedicated entirely to supporting ex-service personnel — at no cost to them.
This approach ensures that veterans remain at the heart of everything VEP Sailing Events does.
Why Public Support Is Essential
The current GoFundMe campaign is about more than fundraising. It is about demonstrating belief in the project and its purpose.
Public support helps attract future sponsorship, media interest, and long-term backing. Whether someone donates £1 or contributes more significantly, every donation helps build momentum and ensures the project can continue supporting veterans.
Those wishing to support the mission can donate via the official GoFundMe page here.
Supporting Veterans Through Action
VEP Sailing Events is built on action, not promises. Through sailing, veterans are given space to reconnect, rebuild confidence, and rediscover purpose in an environment rooted in teamwork and mutual respect.
Service should never be forgotten once a uniform comes off. VEP Sailing Events exists to ensure that support continues — on land and at sea.
