Two bystanders rescue three children from an icy pond and first responders managed to resuscitate a 6-year-old girl.
Four kids aged between 4 and 11 were playing on an iced-over pong at ‘The Addison’ at Cherry Creek apartments in Arapahoe, Colorado when suddenly the ice broke sending three of them into the freezing water.
Luckily 23-year-old Dusti Talavera was looking out her window…
“I was looking out my window and saw a couple of kids walking on the ice pond. A few seconds later, I saw them fall in”
“Before I even realized it, I was out there on the middle of the pond pulling two kids out. That’s when I fell in.”
She managed to pull two of the children out before falling in herself.
Moments later a 16-year-old boy jumped into the pond, throwing them a rope to help pull both Talavera and the 6-year-old girl out.
“I tried to hold her head up, I tried to hold my head up, the pond was really deep (15 ft). A young man threw us a rope. He pulled us out,” she said.
“she wasn’t concerned for her safety because they were babies and they needed help.” she said to deputies.
When the deputies arrived at the scene the 6-year-old girl was unconscious, not breathing and had no pulse. Deputy David Rodriquez immediately began compressing her chest and giving her mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Deputy Justin Dillard and Deputy Blaine Moulton also assisted in the life-saving CPR. They continued until the South Metro Fire Rescue service arrived and took over.
The young girl was taken to hospital breathing with a pulse and listed in a ‘stable condition’.
As you can see in the video this whole ordeal really hit home with the first responders.
