Jacks Anderson and her wife were at a fried chicken stand eating lunch when they looked up and noticed they were being watched by a pregnant street dog.

It was the eyes of a large black pittie named Poppy that was watching them while lay under the barstool at the counter on the sidewalk.

Anderson said: “She never took her eyes off of us, but she didn’t come close or beg for food. The owners of the stand came out and shooed her away down the sidewalk. It was obvious she was scared, and she disappeared.”

The couple then spotted Poppy on the way home from lunch, this is when they noticed her large, pregnant belly, it was at this point they knew they needed to help her.

“My wife took the leftovers, and I walked toward her to put them down for her, she was very skittish, but we could see some of the scars that she has, so I understood why she didn’t want to risk it.” Anderson said.

The couple manages to gain the nervous dog’s trust enough so she would take food right out of their hand. Once comfortable they lifted the heavy pregnant dog into their car.

After getting her in the car Anderson commented: “We just kind of paused at that moment to allow Poppy to calm a bit, but honestly, she was far calmer than I anticipated, I started to record the video of my wife comforting her, and I realized that Poppy had tears coming from her eyes. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that in a dog, and it definitely made an impact.”

Poppy was taken to the vets where they treated her to fleas and worms but other than that she was pretty healthy.

Anderson said: “Poppy spent her first couple of days with us just one on one, she slept nearly all the time and acclimated to the couch pretty quickly. In the last day or two, she’s become far more active, showing interest in the other dogs and following me around instead of sleeping.”

When the couple first met Poppy they had only planned on fostering her but they didn’t want her to go through any more stress and that she deserves an easy life from here on out.
