Zach Galifianakis saved the laundry woman from homelessness by setting her up in an apartment and pays for her rent and her utilities. Along with all of this he took her to the premiere of “The Hangover Part II” in a limo!
Elizabeth Haist or Mimi could never imagine herself walking down the red carpet of the premiere of a blockbuster movie.
The elderly woman used to be homeless and struggling to get by but after forging an unlikely friendship with a then-unknown comedian changed her life.
He first met her in 1994, he was just an upcoming comic trying to make ends meet and Mimi worked in a laundromat surviving mostly off tips.
Zach used this laundromat frequently and they formed a close bond over the years and after he broke into Hollywood with the release of Hollywood he moved away. Mimi simply thought “maybe he has his own washer and dryer now”.
Further down the line, Zach learned that Mimi had become homeless, he immediately contacted her and help her to move into a new home paying her rent and utilities.
He then introduced Mimi to Renee Zellweger who was kind enough to furnish her apartment. Whenever Zach is in town they go out for lunch together. Zellweger describes her as a “very sweet lady” and she also buys groceries for Mimi.
“I really love it. I have a place where I can sleep and arrange things, and it’s really heaven,” Mimi told PEOPLE. “I still go to the laundromat every day to keep busy and people come in and say, ‘Oh you’re a star!’
Zach has also taken Mimi to the premiere of his movie “The Campaign” where no one really knew who she was which generated a lot of press at the time. “All the fans were taking photos and I waved at them, I said, ‘They don’t know who I am!’”
She now has a taste for these big events “I’m looking forward to it, I like the excitement of it,”
