Bitwise Launches First U.S. NEAR ETF

October 1, 2026 6 min read
Bitwise launches the first U.S. NEAR ETF, offering investors regulated exposure to the NEAR Protocol cryptocurrency.

Bitwise Launches First U.S. NEAR ETF

Bitwise has expanded its range of cryptocurrency investment products with the launch of the first U.S. spot exchange-traded product focused on NEAR. The Bitwise NEAR ETF gives investors a new way to gain exposure to the NEAR Protocol without directly buying or storing the cryptocurrency.

Trading under the ticker NRR, the fund began trading on NYSE Arca on 29th September 2026. It comes as asset managers continue to broaden their cryptocurrency offerings beyond Bitcoin and Ethereum.

However, the Bitwise NEAR ETF has another notable feature. Bitwise intends to stake the NEAR held by the fund, potentially allowing the ETF to generate staking rewards alongside exposure to changes in the value of NEAR.

The launch also puts a greater spotlight on NEAR Protocol and its ambitions within artificial intelligence, blockchain infrastructure and cross-chain transactions.

What Is the Bitwise NEAR ETF?

The Bitwise NEAR ETF is designed to give investors spot exposure to NEAR through a conventional exchange-traded investment product.

Instead of purchasing NEAR through a cryptocurrency exchange and managing digital asset storage, investors can access the asset through shares in the fund.

NRR launched with a 0.75% management fee. However, investors should recognise that purchasing shares in the ETF is not the same as owning NEAR directly. Investors gain exposure through the fund rather than holding the underlying tokens themselves.

For some investors, this structure could provide a more familiar route into the cryptocurrency market. It removes the need to manage wallets, private keys and direct cryptocurrency custody.

Nevertheless, it does not remove the risks associated with digital assets. NEAR can still experience significant price volatility, meaning the value of the ETF can move sharply.

NEAR Staking Adds Another Element

One of the most significant features of the new Bitwise NEAR ETF is staking.

NEAR operates using a proof-of-stake system. Under this model, cryptocurrency can be committed to the network to support transaction validation and network security. Participants can receive rewards in return.

Bitwise plans to stake the fund’s NEAR holdings using its own institutional staking operation.

At the time of the ETF’s launch, Bitwise cited an average NEAR staking reward of approximately 5%. However, this rate can change and does not represent a guaranteed return for investors.

Instead of being distributed as a separate payment, staking rewards earned by the fund are expected to contribute to its net asset value.

This means investors could potentially receive exposure to two different elements of NEAR’s ecosystem: movements in the token’s market price and rewards generated through staking.

That combination distinguishes NRR from investment products that simply track the price of an underlying cryptocurrency.

Why Is Bitwise Focusing on NEAR Protocol?

The launch comes as NEAR Protocol attempts to establish itself within several developing areas of blockchain technology.

NEAR is a layer-one blockchain built to support decentralised applications and digital transactions. The network has increasingly focused on the potential relationship between blockchain technology and artificial intelligence.

Bitwise has highlighted this connection as an important part of the investment case surrounding NEAR.

Artificial intelligence agents could eventually carry out more tasks on behalf of users. These could include arranging services, making payments, exchanging digital assets and interacting with different applications.

If this type of automated economy develops, AI systems may require infrastructure capable of settling transactions securely and efficiently.

NEAR is attempting to position its technology as part of that infrastructure.

However, the AI and blockchain sector remains highly competitive. The scale of future adoption is far from certain, and several networks are developing technology aimed at similar opportunities.

NEAR Intents Highlights Cross-Chain Ambitions

One technology receiving particular attention is NEAR Intents.

The system is designed to make blockchain interactions simpler by allowing users or applications to specify what they want to achieve. Infrastructure can then determine how the transaction should be completed.

This approach could become increasingly relevant as the number of blockchain networks and digital assets continues to grow.

According to figures released by Bitwise at the time of the ETF launch, NEAR Intents had processed more than $32 billion in volume. That compares with less than $1 billion approximately one year earlier.

Bitwise also states that the NEAR network can finalise transactions in around 1.2 seconds while maintaining relatively low transaction costs.

These characteristics could become important if blockchain networks are expected to process growing numbers of transactions from both human users and automated AI systems.

Crypto ETFs Are Moving Beyond Bitcoin

The arrival of the Bitwise NEAR ETF also reflects a wider change across the cryptocurrency investment market.

Bitcoin was the primary focus of early U.S. spot crypto investment products. Ethereum followed, while other digital assets have gradually gained their own exchange-traded products.

Bitwise has been particularly active in expanding this area.

Its range of single-asset crypto products includes exposure to Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, XRP and Hyperliquid alongside its newly launched NEAR fund.

The company also already has experience offering NEAR-related investment products outside the United States. Bitwise operates a staking exchange-traded product for NEAR in Europe.

NRR therefore extends the company’s existing NEAR strategy into the U.S. market.

What Does the NEAR ETF Offer Investors?

For investors interested in NEAR Protocol, the ETF provides a different route to gaining market exposure.

Direct cryptocurrency ownership can require several additional steps. Investors may need to choose an exchange, create a wallet, understand private keys and decide how their assets will be stored.

An exchange-traded product can simplify some of these practical requirements.

Investors can instead gain exposure through a structure that operates within traditional financial markets.

Staking could also add another dimension to the fund. If Bitwise successfully generates rewards from the NEAR held by NRR, those rewards can contribute to the fund’s net asset value.

However, the structure should not be confused with a low-risk investment.

Cryptocurrency prices remain volatile. Staking rewards can change, while regulatory developments and competition between blockchain networks could also influence future performance.

Bitwise itself states that NRR carries a high degree of risk and could result in a significant or complete loss of investment. The company also notes that NRR is not registered under the Investment Company Act of 1940 and therefore does not receive the same protections as funds registered under that legislation.

NEAR Targets the Emerging AI Economy

Perhaps the most interesting part of the ETF launch is the broader technology story surrounding NEAR.

Blockchain networks have traditionally focused on areas such as decentralised finance, payments, gaming and digital ownership. However, artificial intelligence is creating another potential use case.

AI agents capable of acting independently could require ways to exchange value without relying entirely on traditional payment systems.

NEAR wants to provide part of that infrastructure.

The idea remains at an early stage, but the rapid growth of artificial intelligence has encouraged technology companies and blockchain developers to explore how the two sectors could work together.

For Bitwise, that potential appears to be an important reason for expanding its NEAR investment offering.

Bitwise Expands Its Crypto ETF Strategy

The Bitwise NEAR ETF represents another step in the expansion of cryptocurrency products available through traditional financial markets.

Rather than limiting investors to the largest cryptocurrencies, asset managers are increasingly offering exposure to individual blockchain ecosystems and specialised areas of the digital asset market.

NRR combines spot exposure to NEAR with planned staking, while also connecting the investment product to NEAR Protocol’s ambitions in artificial intelligence and cross-chain transactions.

Whether NEAR becomes a major part of an AI-powered digital economy remains to be seen. Adoption, competition, cryptocurrency prices and regulation will all play a role.

However, the launch gives U.S. investors a new way to access the NEAR ecosystem without directly purchasing and storing the cryptocurrency.

As the cryptocurrency ETF market continues to expand, the arrival of the first U.S. NEAR ETF shows how regulated digital asset products are increasingly moving beyond Bitcoin and Ethereum.
