Leading experts in alcohol addiction, former Shrewsbury Mayor Jane Mackenzie, founder of the Share Shrewsbury charity, presenter Adrian Chiles, and journalist Camilla Tominey join forces to host a one-of-a-kind virtual conference on Thursday 19th May and Friday 20th May 2022.
Titled ‘Alcohol: Sharing The Truth’ the online conference aims to do exactly that, inspiring talks, and discussions with those who have suffered from alcohol addiction first-hand. The event will give viewers a deep look into how dangerous alcohol can be, the damage it has on the body, the changes in your brain, and how the latest research is finding new ways to treat and help recovery.
Jane said, “Deaths caused by alcohol in 2020 increased by almost 19%, marking the biggest rise since records began, according to the Office for National Statistics.
Scotland and Northern Ireland continued to have the highest rates of alcohol deaths, but the fastest rises were in Wales and England. The sharpest rise in deaths in England was in the West Midlands, followed by the south-west and London. These statistics are truly alarming and if we’re to curb the trend, more has to be done.”
“Share Shrewsbury’s unique, virtual conference is for everyone, from anywhere in the country who wants to understand more about alcohol, and the impact it has on the individual, the family and society. Over the two-day conference, we’ll hear about the latest breakthroughs in research and treatment of alcohol dependence.
World-class speakers will touch on the best practice for recovery, and talk about how families can be central to this. We’ll also explore the ways in which stigma negatively affects recovery, highlight why we need to change the way we think about addictive behaviour and address both the physical and mental issues of sufferers from the start.”
Experts like national recovery champion Dr Ed Day, Prof Markus Heilig, Prof Davis Nutt, former Government advisor Chip Somers, and ex-Match of the Day host Adrian Chiles who opened up about alcoholism back in 2018 will be a part of the conference alongside former The One Show presenter Camilla Tominey.
Tickets to this virtual conference are FREE and can be watched here LIVE.
